Why her career looks different

Most actors choose films first and study later. Sai Pallavi did it the other way round. She was a medical student in Georgia when Premam came, and she shot her scenes during college holidays before flying back to her exams. That order explains much of what fans notice today: she picks scripts carefully, and she has a record of turning down big projects.

Childhood and the dance shows

She was raised in Coimbatore and studied at Avila Convent School. Her first screen appearance was a small uncredited part in Kasthuri Maan (2005). Before that, dance was her main interest. She appeared on Ungalil Yaar Adutha Prabhu Deva (2008) and later reached the finals of Dhee (D4) in Telugu. Those clips later reached the directors who cast her.

Doctor or actor? What the records show

She graduated in 2016 from Tbilisi State Medical University. On 31 August 2020 she took the FMGE in Trichy, which foreign medical graduates must clear to practise in India. Reports say she has chosen not to register as a practising doctor. So she is a qualified doctor, but she has not worked as one.

Career in four phases

1. The breakthrough (2015–2016). As Malar in Premam, she won the Filmfare Best Female Debut – South. Kali (2016) with Dulquer Salmaan followed.

2. Telugu and Tamil debuts (2017–2018). Fidaa (2017) made her a Telugu star as Bhanumathi, and MCA with Nani followed. Her Tamil debut was Diya (2018), released as Kanam in Telugu. Then came Maari 2, whose song “Rowdy Baby” was the first South Indian music video to cross one billion YouTube views. Padi Padi Leche Manasu (2018) did not do well at the box office.

3. Character-driven roles (2019–2022). In Athiran (2019) she played Nithya, a character with limited speech. She was Geetha Kumari in NGK, and Sumathi in the Netflix anthology Paava Kadhaigal. Then came Love Story, Shyam Singha Roy (a devadasi in 1970s Kolkata), Virata Parvam and Gargi.

4. Pan-India and Hindi cinema (2024–now). Amaran (2024) cast her as Indhu Rebecca Varghese, wife of Major Mukund Varadarajan. Thandel followed in 2025. Her Hindi debut Ek Din released on 1 May 2026, with mixed reviews and a weak start at the box office. Ramayana: Part 1 is next.

Every Filmfare South win, film by film

That is seven wins from eleven nominations. Other honours: Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Gargi, Kalaimamani (2021), three SIIMA awards, and Forbes India 30 Under 30 (2020), where she was the only film actor listed.

What’s coming next

• Ramayana: Part 1 (Nitesh Tiwari): she plays Sita opposite Ranbir Kapoor, with Yash as Ravana. Release is 6 November 2026, and Part 2 is planned for Diwali 2027.
• Om: Chapter 1 with Dhanush, directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy, is reported to be in production.
• A Mani Ratnam film with Vijay Sethupathi is reported, and shooting pictures from Kolkata have appeared. Its title is not confirmed.

Choices that shaped her image

• In 2019 she turned down a fairness cream advertisement reported at ₹2 crore, and spoke publicly against colourism.
• After Padi Padi Leche Manasu failed, she reportedly gave up the unpaid part of her fee.
• She has declined several big films, including Arjun Reddy and Dear Comrade according to reports. She has said she looks for roles with substance.

Money: what is reported and what is not

Media reports put her net worth at ₹45–50 crore, and that is an estimate, not an audited figure. Her Ramayana fee is reported at ₹6 crore per part, and Thandel at about ₹5 crore. Sai Pallavi has not confirmed these numbers.

Fact-check: claims that keep repeating

• “She practises as a doctor.” No. She holds the degree and cleared the FMGE, but chose acting.
• “She earns ₹12–15 crore per film. The ₹12 crore figure reported is for both Ramayana parts.
• “Ek Din is upcoming.” Outdated. It was released on 1 May 2026.
• “She was born in Kotagiri.” Disputed. Coimbatore is more commonly reported, and Kotagiri is her family’s hometown.
• Fake images: In September 2025, AI-altered photos of her circulated online. She responded by posting the original video from her trip.
